I have only driven my 2008 KIA 800 miles since last year Thanksgiving, when I bought it. I have been changing the oil every 3 months as KIA company told me. Should I be doing this? When we go to Florida for some months, the car stays in the garage and is not used. Would that keep the oil cleaner or make it more prone to sludge, or neither?

Vehicles that are driven less than 7.500 miles a year are good candidates for longer drain interval oils that are designed for 1 year oil changes. Amsoil and Mobil offer extended drain oils with one year drain intervals.

Short mileage driving that does not let the engine warm up are some of the hardest miles on oil. Oil companies recommend 3,000 miles or 4 months for oil changes; the time is based on short trips and never getting the oil up to temp and boiling off the moisture. Amsoil and some Mobil oils are designed for 1 year oil changes not to exceed 25,000 miles for Amsoil and 15,000 miles for Mobil. So you could do 1 year oil changes on your car without any problem. I think you can enhance the protection and cut cost at the same time.
