I own a 2003 Ford F-250 V-10 4x4 pickup, and used ONLY Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil when performing oil changes. I've heard several different "quotes" on how MANY miles between oil changes using a synthetic as good as Mobil 1. They range from 5000, all the way up to 10000+. I live in Colorado and do spent some time in off-road conditions, but the truck is well maintained and has only 17,000 miles to date. My question is this: What mileage is BEST, and regardless of miles, how OFTEN (months) should it be changed, and why?

Thanks! Alan from Highlands Ranch

Alan,

One of the most prevalent misconceptions about synthetic oils is that they all can provide longer drain intervals for oil changes; this is simply not true. Only, Amsoil and Mobil offer extended oil drains. Mobil offers the longer drain intervals for Mobil Platinum (Extended Life Oil) and Amsoil offers a full line of extended drain interval oils.

Yes! You should comply with the time requirements stipulated by the oil manufacturer. Oils undergo cycles (heat up and cool down) in normal use and each time it is heated and then cools down this is one cycle. Cycles deplete the additive package and without additives the oil cannot function for all required task in the engine.

Your V-10 Ford engine would be best served by Amsoil 5W-30 original synthetic. This oil is recommended for 25,000 miles for regular driving or 15,000 miles for severe driving (or 1 year whichever comes first).
